::: colour sorting junk
Colour sorting is always a great activity to start the year off.

Most importantly colour sorting can take many, many shapes.

Here at Ringwood Uniting Preschool the children were provided with some plastic junk pieces picked up from Resource Rescue …

along with matching coloured dots ..

and were invited to sort them in any way they chose.

We saw the children match the coloured pieces to the dots.

We saw them mix up the coloured pieces and the dots.

And we saw them create coloured pattern on the dots!

This is open ended play based learning!

I love the idea of the dots. With the littlies i usually use containers so it adds their love of putting things in and out of containers. What age would you recommend the above activities for?
::: Lesley the beauty of open ended play is that it is suitable for all ages. Just let them play with it in their own way … They may surprise you!

I loved the sorting of colors on a different colored dot. What great thinking!
::: Thanks Scotty … It is so simple yet the children can experiment is so many different ways.

This is so simple yet once again so effective. I picked up some brand new plastic tissue boxes (the kind that you place over the cardboard tissue boxes) for 50 cents each at Salvos and they would be perfect for posting coloured treasures into…then again, the circles allow you to observe the child’s thinking and the intricacies of their sorting processes – thanks for you idea Sherry and Donna…and Lesley also.
PS…love that junk
::: Thanks Bianca … We LOVE ‘junk’ too!
