::: woollen nests

Here in Australia, we have some really amazing bird life, which frequently visit our suburban gardens.

The children were looking for an idea for making Easter egg baskets …

and after watching the birds visiting the pine cone bird feeders they made a few days before, they thought making birds nests as baskets would be a fun idea.

We found some wool and P.V.A. glue and covered a bowl in some plastic wrap, in the same way we made our paper mâché bowls at Christmas.

They snipped the wool into small lengths – about 20cm long, and set to it.

Next they mixed in the glue – preferring to use their hands!

Then it was simply a case of spreading the gluey wool over the plastic wrapped bowl.

The plastic wrap will make removing the dried wool easy.

It took a good 24 hours for the glue to dry …

but it was certainly well worth the wait!

  1. I love this. Also just wanted to say how much I love your blog – I rarely comment but am always reading it and introducing your ideas with my own children.

    ::: Why thank you BPC and thanks for commenting today. We do love to hear from the people who enjoy what we have to offer! :) :)

    OH MY GOSH I LOVE THIS! That is such a great idea. Our yard has been a hot bed for birds nests lately and we are so into looking at how they are made. Not sure I can find that specific glue; any suggestions on other types of glue I could use?

    ::: Abbie in Australia we call it P.V.A. glue – in America I believe it is called Elmos glue! :) :)

    i have tried doing this with slightly inflated balloons to make decorations but unfortunately they tended to deflate and some decorations collapsed but i like the bowl idea…

    ::: Jennifer one our friends, Pam, says she used wool dipped in liquid starch for her balloons and it doesn’t collapse when the ballon is popped! :) :)

    I am so very jealous of your wildbird life there. Granted, I do get to see a couple of your native birds daily…but that is because they live in cages in my house!

    ::: We agree Bev, we are very lucky. We do have some incredibly beautiful native birds around us. :) :)
