Balwyn East Kindergarten …

is situated next to an extensive parkland just off Belmore Road near Union Road.

This parkland effect is carried into the kindergarten grounds with a rolling lawn spreading out beneath a magnificent old oak tree.

They have ‘secret’ gardens that are perfect for quiet, private play …

and miniature gardens in raised beds.

The day we arrived there was a wealth of activities to keep the children happy and occupied outside.

Children were making cubbies with the blocks …

as well as with swathes of fabric on the different lawn areas.

Painting was provided at the easels inside …

and out.

Drawing with lovely fat oil pastels (that don’t break!) …

was another activity offered both inside and out.

Painting with water – always a winner …

was going on all over the yard.

Children were playing in the sandpit, which has a great work bench …

as well as ramps and gutters to direct the sand, water and vehicles down.

Seeing children enjoying some quiet construction on a shaded deck underneath one of those huge trees was just perfect.

Inside, the room is bathed in natural light thanks to the huge bank of floor to ceiling windows running the full length of the room.

There were many open ended activities available …

for the children to explore …

although they were all outside enjoying the sunshine when we were there …

and who could blame them!

We loved the rainbow ‘tent’ over the painting table … ahh the possibilities with that!

There were imaginative play stations…

and wooden puzzles, as well as

pattern making using natural materials like logs, sticks and stones.

This home corner set up was absolutely delightful …

and we loved that they were recycling these old plant pots and decorating them with poscas.

They had a very cute library corner …

light box activities …

and an old fashioned writing desk complete with a mirror.

We’ve noticed on our travels that a lot of schools and kindergartens have pets and interesting creatures in their rooms. Here the children have an aquarium with some happy fish to look after.

The very friendly staff at Bawlyn East, run two 4 year old groups …

and one 3 year old group.

Balwyn East Kindergarten is located in the City of Boroondara at the corner of Belmore Road and Caravan Street, Balwyn East  (Melways reference 46 H5).

This information has been added to our Education Directory page.

::: Scott the outdoor space is amazing. I really don’t think my photos do it credit … such lucky, lucky chidren. :) :)

  2. Wow, you had me at the oak tree. What a fabulous environment for learning! You’re doing a great job with the tours, thanks you :)

::: Lisa we’re glad you are enjoying this as we are really enjoying the opportunity to share other peoples lovely spaces with you. The rainbow canopy came from Ikea … but it was a few years ago I’m affraid! :) :)

My sons kindy have 2 large shady trees and manicured lawns and gardens. It is such a beautiful setting and luckily the staff and others involved are just as wonderful. You have taken some wonderful shots here.

::: Thanks Glenys. Your sons kindy sounds similar to the look of this one … beautiful! :) :)

What an absolutely beautiful kinder- indoors and out!! I would love to know how many children are in the sessions for each kinder because I look at the enormous rooms and all the space for so many different activities at once and I feel a bit sad for my squashy little kinder room, but then I have only 20 children each session. Also, are you planning to feature any long day care centres?

Really enjoying the education directory- awesome idea and very inspiring!! :)

::: Bex we’re glad you are enjoying the Education Directory. The group sizes at Balwyn East are around 25 children in each of their four year old groups. We would love to visit long day care centres who follow a play based learning philosophy but as there is currently no directory listing such places we need to wait for them to come to us. :) :)
