::: tong play
We did a post a while ago on a fine motor activity using tweezers.
The box which held all the goodies was a photo frame with various compartments.
At Highvale Preschool the staff extended this activity by providing small sets of metal tongs …
to pick up a colourful assortment of bits and pieces.
Their base was an old printers box that the metal letters would have been stored in …
just perfect for this activity.
We loved that the children were trusted with the use of these large solid glass jars from which they carefully removed the objects …
and place in the small compartments.
While we were watching this pair of friends were having a great time racing to see who could pick up the most bits and pieces.
While this young girl was very ordered and methodical in her selections.
What a wonderful fine motor activity.
What a simply irresistible idea!

I am absolutely in love with this!!!! I am going to try it. Thank you for posting so many great ideas.
::: It’s our pleasure to share Sarah. This one’s a beauty isn’t it!

As always a wonderful post – I am hooked on your blog and have thought of creating my own – but – need to find out how you blank out the children’s faces….can you help me please?
::: Good on you Maria. As for the children’s faces I use a program called ‘Adobe Photoshop CS’ (I work on a Mac).

I’m always on the lookout for cool sorting boxes. I would be in heaven if I came across one of these!
::: You know Tom I have three of these boxes sitting idle under my house and I never thought of using them in this way. What a shame you live so far away!

awesome! love it!
::: Thanks Activity Mom.

This is a great activity. I used a ‘lazy susan’ type dish with all the bits and bobs in it and the children transfered the pieces in and out of individul ice cube trays. I absolutely love your old printing box though it is so rustic. I’m on the look out for one of them…:)
::: We like your ‘lazy susan’ idea Bianca. Printing boxes have become a bit of a collectors item these days. You may have to look in antique shops to find them.

Love it, love it, love it Thanks x
::: So glad you love it Cathy!

Love this activity. I used to work with a team of Occupational Therapists and they seemed to use tongs for everything! Great for fine motor control and development
::: Thanks Julie. We love using tongs and tweezers, even chops sticks for this very reason!

Hahaha I planned a tong activity this week for my 3′s.
We use the small metal tongs, some straw bowls and small fluffy balls. The kids love to sort out the colours and sizes. Next week I will definitely try find a box like yours!
::: Sounds like fun Jessie. Here’s hoping you can find a similar box now!

Just letting you know that I Ttried a tong activity that I saw at a Cath Walker PD this week. It involved tongs, an upsidedown bath mat and some marbles that sat beautifully in the bathmats suction caps. So simple yet so wonderful.
::: That sounds really cool Bianca. As they say … the simple things in life are often the best … and I think it’s so important, as educators, that we remember that.

impelemnted this activity for children and they loved it. they played several times and enhanced their small muscles. Thanks..
::: That’s great Neslihan … So pleased they enjoyed it!
