::: moon sand recipe
We love ‘moon sand’ or ‘magic sand’ for sensory sand play. You can buy it from art and craft suppliers, but it is fairly expensive.
When we did a post on it a while ago, some kind people sent in the recipe so we could make it ourselves at a fraction of the cost.
Mix together:
4 cups sand
2 cups cornflour
1 cup of water.
We gave it a go and although different from the commercial sort …
it was still very successful.
The children had a lot of fun with it.
When it dried out in the sun a bit, it crumbled up beautifully and was easily restored with a bit more water added to it.

what kind of sand do you use for the moon sand
::: Gina we used the sand straight from our sand pit … It’s called ‘white’ sand.

Where do you find white sand and corn flour? Is corn flour the same as corn meal? Corn meal is very coarse; I have not seen corn flour.
Thanks
::: Roberta you may refer to corn flour as corn starch. As for the white sand, it is straight out of our sand pit!

thanks! I thought maybe corn starch, but was not sure. Thanks again,
I made the moon sand & was very happy with it —- but after a few days in a covered container, it developed a terrible smell and what appeared to be mold! Does it need to remain in an open container? Has anyone else had this problem?
::: YES Jennifer keep it uncovered and simply add some water to bring it back to the desired consistency next time you play with it.

Oh! Thank you! My neice is going to love this (something tells me her teenage sisters are going to like it too :p ). I only wish I’d known about it when I was teaching preschool.
If your sand box sand is nasty (as ours was where I worked), you can get small quantities of nice sand at craft stores, it even comes in different colors. Its used to make those bottles with layers of colored sand that you make at the fair and stuff, usually in the aisle with all the kid-friendly supplies (feathers, pom poms, foam stickers, etc). Or if you wanted to make a bigger batch they sell sand at hardware stores, I’m not sure what the smallest quantity they sell is though.
::: We love coloured sand too Ivory … Check out this post to see how we colour our own! … http://www.playbasedlearning.com.au/2011/04/making-coloured-sand/
