::: mini beasts

Ever since the children collected up the snails recently, they have been on the look out for more mini beasts to investigate. Right on cue, when we were out in the garden the other day, they found the most beautiful praying mantis.

He was living on a thornless rose bush and was most affronted when pruning took place and his home was reduced!

What a fascinating creature! Up close Sherry thought he looked prehistoric while Donna thought more alien. The children just thought he looked cool!

He gallantly climbed up and down the children’s arms and bodies waving his front legs and antennas around in the air.

They loved the feeling of his feet on their skin.

They also loved looking at his bulging eyes.

We don’t know how he felt about theirs but he appeared fearless.

After a little while we asked them to find a home for him, and no, inside your pocket isn’t a good one!

We chatted to them about what sort of place he would prefer to live and they finally got the idea that he would feel better where he could be camouflaged and safe – phew!
