::: painting in salt

We found a great idea on another blog  … sorry just can’t remember which one! … and thought we’d give it a try.

It involves glue, salt, card and coloured water!

The children’s first job (after writing their names - many still need reminding of this even after two years of reminding!) was to draw a pattern on card with a glue stick – such fun when you can’t really see it!

Next salt needed to be carefully placed over the glue …

with the excess shaken off.

Now the pattern was starting to appear!

Last job (the children are relishing these activities with various stages in them now) was to carefully drop coloured water onto the salt and let it be absorbed.

Just enough meant the paint followed the salt trail and da dah, the pattern was fully disclosed …

Too much paint meant it was lots of fun squeezing those eye droppers, but don’t worry about the salt pattern!

So saying that, even these ones retained a lovely texture and interesting look.

We saw lots of very interesting patterns …

colours …

and textures emerge …

in this lovely activity!

P.S. November 22nd 2010

Thanks to Tracy we now know where we first found this great activity. Please be sure to pop over and visit … http://jojoebi.blogspot.com/2010/02/salt-painting.html … Thank you!

  1. Did you wait for glue to dry or were you straight into the edicol whilst the glue was still sticky?

::: Cait we didn’t wait for the glue to dry! The salt covered all the glue and then the children got busyy with the colouring. :) :)

This was just in Family Fun magazine as well and I ripped it out to try it. They used squeezed Elmers glue bottles, but the glue stick is another great idea! Are those baby food jars? We used to use them for everything and the licensing department told us we had to get rid of the glass. The paint just looks so beautiful in them. Your photographs are always so stunning. Thank you.

::: Thanks Dana we love that our pictures speak louder than words on our blog! We also LOVE using glue sticks and they were perfect for this job … and yes they are baby food jars and we LOVE using them too! AND you can let your “licensing department” know that in all the years we’ve been using them (and that is a lot of years) we have never had one broken … dropped MANY times but smashed NEVER!! :) :)

Very cool! I have also done a painting experience on cardboard, with paint you make with equal parts of plain flour, salt and paint. It dries kinda puffy but you can then make it even ‘puffier’ (is that a word?) by putting the piece of cardboard in the microwave til it cooks the paint mixture. It looks great!

::: Wow Narelle … that sounds like fun! :) :)

I’ve seen this activity at http://jojoebi.blogspot.com/2010/02/salt-painting.html

Even nearly tried it this week, but didn’t because I thought the glue would have to dry and we didn’t have enough time. Maybe this week!
