::: box car races
A little while ago we asked the children to bring a shoe box with a lid along to kinder.

The day before we went on our excursion to the Kew Traffic School they made their boxes into cars, buses, trucks or whatever vehicle they liked.

We put out heaps of materials and let them go for it.

We encouraged them to select their bits and pieces and do the making on the floor so that multiples of children could be working at the same time.

The first thing we encouraged them to do was to paste the lids onto the bottom of the boxes to give them extra strength – they don’t last long being dragged around the yard otherwise.

We were so impressed at the intensity of their work …

their concentration, and actually the peace which descended on the kinder – seeing children hard at work is a wonderful thing!

As usual they came up with many varied results, some plain and simple…

and others quite complex.

The day following the excursion they brought along a “passenger” to fit into their box cars and off they went, many for the whole session, charging around our kinder roads, having races down on the grass …

and occasionally taking notice of the road signs …

and their friends with the power of the mini traffic lights.

What a great week we had, full of learning and fun!
