::: recipe card collages

When the children from last year made their alien head gear, we gave them an instruction card of what they could attach to the base and how many of each they could use – a bit like a recipe.

We thought we would have some more maths fun with these children but with a slightly different focus.

We made a set of four math style ‘recipe cards’ and they chose which one they wanted to follow.

We provided the children with baskets so they could collect their bits and pieces …

and set out PVA glue and heavy cardboard for their pastings.

They could make any picture they liked and could add or pull it altogether with drawings.

Some children chose to replicate the recipe layout on the card …

while others followed the recipe to create their own ideas.

Then there were those who chose a ‘recipe card’ but did their own thing.

and some just … did their own thing!

As always though, their designs were unique and creative!

This one was a bit of a standout as this child invented his own recipe card! What an amazingly open ended math concept for children!?

This post has been added to the Teach Preschool Everyday Math in Preschool Linky. Be sure to pop on over and see how other preschoolers are developing early numeracy skills.

I’ve never seen this recipe card idea and I really like it.

And I especially like the child who did his own recipe card!

Thanks for continuing to stimulate my thinking.

::: Like we often say Scott … We love the way children think outside the square! :) :)

Oh gosh – so in love with this idea. Some of my “I’m almost at big school” kids are so up for extra challenge, and this would be the perfect twist to add to our construction / craft table. Irresistible!

::: You’re absolutely right Jenny and that is what this type of activity is all about … allowing those children who ARE ready, to be extended! :) :)

Me too! Thanks for posting a great activity for those children who are looking for more structured stuff (and sometimes we don’t know that they are until you offer it…) :)

::: You’re so right Louise and that is why open ended activities are SO important … allowing every child to develop at their own pace! :) :)
