::: I love Dad because …

Here in Melbourne it is Fathers’ Day on the first Sunday in September. We are not inclined to make a big fuss about presents and cards, but we nearly always like to do a ‘why I love my Dad’ thing, similar to what we did for the mums earlier in the year.

Again we were given an idea from one of the children – they are so good, aren’t they?

Charlotte gave us this picture to hang up.

She cut out clothes from ribbon, taped it onto a piece of paper, then drew the head, arms and feet with black pencil.

We thought it looked great and would be a different way for the children to create pictures of their dads. We slightly adapted what Charlotte had done by offering the children a selection of plain and patterned paper and left them to come up with some great ideas.

Some children carefully drew the clothes on the coloured paper first, before cutting them out and pasting them to white paper.

Some careful informal measuring also took place so that the tops fitted the bottoms.

Others of course were not so fussy.

Many of them included themselves in the picture too and regardless of the way they were made each one was as unique as it was beautiful!

The children then dictated a story, to our student Nikki, about why they love their dads which was typed up, printed out and pasted onto their beautiful pictures.

Then the old favourite once more …

laminating the finished product.

Simple but effective. We hope the dads like them.

Thanks for the irresistible idea Charlotte!

    Gosh, I had forgotten. This post was a great reminder thank you! Cute, cute cute!

    ::: They are, aren’t they Shar! :) :)

    What I love about this is that you got the idea from one of the children, gave it back to them, then the children develop their own ideas and maybe there’s one idea – or lots! – that you then bring back to them again….a real learning cycle. Please tell Charlotte that I would like to “borrow” her idea for my children too! :)

    ::: What a great way of looking at it Louise … and we’re sure Charlotte would be delighted to share her idea around! :) :)

  3. I would so love a laminator! We always treasure the homemade gifts that come home from kinder for mother’s and father’s days. They tend to be matching, I received a mini portrait of me for mother’s day and as I was on duty the morning they made them, dad will be getting one too. So sweet!

    ::: A portrait is always very cute, we agree Planning Queen! As for laminators … we wouldn’t be without it! :) :)

    We’ve never done anything special for mother or father’s day because I’ve never cared for the cloying pre-packaged teacher ideas. This, however, is perfect. There’s a lot of love in these artworks. =)

    My only criticism of laminators is that the sleeves are so expensive. We usually do one or two laminator projects a year, but I really have to marshal my resources to make it work.

    ::: We totally agree with the whole “mothers’/ fathers’ day thing Tom and our children are under no expectations (from us at least) to ‘produce gifts’! As for the laminator … it’s like the glue gun we just LOVE it! :) :)

    We used your mothers day idea for fathers day this year. A gorgeous drawing and a message from the heart…”I love dad… because he’s my bestfriend in the whole world”. is just one of the most treasured comments our children made. Almost brought a tear to my eye. I am totally with you guys on the laminator… a definite must have especially for such special keepsakes…One day Hierlooms
    :) :) :)

    ::: Amen to that Mel! :) :)

    Very good idea. I usually overkill on christmas, mothers day, easter etc but this year I will borrow Charlottes idea (if she doesn’t mind) and put it to the children in my Kinder Room. A beautiful thoughtful present from the children’s hearts. Thank you :) :) :)

    ::: You’re welcome ‘H666P. :) :)
