::: kindergarten maths!
Parents often ask us how we can incorporate maths into a kindergarten program when some of the children are not interested in writing their own name, let alone learning about mathemathical concepts.

We have posted before about these wonderful maths tiles and spoken about how maths is all around us in children’s play.

Just look at the amazing patterns our children made last week …

all of this is wonder kindergarten maths!

Building with blocks is maths!

Measuring with blocks … maths!

Counting the blocks while measuring is maths!

Building the blocks to fit the ‘subject’ … that’s right … maths!

Weights and scales is another way the children experiment with maths.

Just watch …

as our friend Olivia …

adds and subtract objects from the buckets …

until she makes the scales balance … maths!
Some kindergarten children are even ready to extend their maths skills further.

This is a game of snakes and ladders drawn up by one of our young friends.

Lots of sequencing of numbers … 100 in all!

Now this my friends is how we can incorporate maths into a kindergarten program!

Yes! I have been teaching 3-5 year olds for more than 30 years. With the push everywhere to teach reading and math at younger and younger ages it is so wonderful to see you show how beautifully young children are constantly mathematicians as they construct meaning around them in their play.
::: You’re so right Lois … mathematicians, engineers, scientists … in fact the whole lot!

Great post… Maths is so much more than a set of numerals. Kindy maths experiences, like these, are soooo much fun!
::: You’re right Miss Jojo! Soooo much fun, soooo much learning!

It’s so good to highlight the learning that is happening when children are “just” playing….
::: Absolutely Louise!

Great ideas! I like the measuring with blocks activity the best.
Most preschoolers are little mathematicians! I’ve watched my own children sort toy cars, teddies, and blocks over the years, cry to use the kitchen or bathroom scales and pretend to “teach” me numbers from a number chart!
::: You’re absolutely right Caroline. They really are little sponges for knowledge aren’t they!

I love that the kids made their own snakes and ladders game. Go kids!
::: Actually Jenny it was a snake and ladders game … too cute hey?!

Love that game.
Math is such an integral part of life – and I’m always excited to see kids count, compare, measure, design, and create. I have some tiles like yours, but mine are magnetic. The kids love to create those designs on the magnet board.
Looks like you have some math “geniuses”!
::: Magnetic tiles Scott, now that would be fun! Geniuses … Absolutely!

I would love some of those tiles in my house! Fun how they are learning in so much in so many different ways without realizing it, isn’t it?
::: The beauty of play based learning Amanda is that the children think it is all about having fun … learning is the bonus along the way!

Last year I had a student who would not do ANYTHING unless we told him it was “math.” He wouldn’t go near the art table unless I told him it was math. Same for puzzles, large motor, fine motor, you name it. As soon as I said it was math he’d give it a go. Funny thing is, it IS all math!
I love this post!
::: What a special child you had there Tom … and you’re right maths is in everywhere!

So many fun maths activities
I love it.
::: Thanks Marita!
