::: chalk drawing on black paper
We have just one large ‘A’ frame blackboard at kinder which appeals to the children much more than our small black boards.

This week as the queue for the large blackboard was slow moving …

we popped out some black paper and chalk to see if the children would be interested in trying something a bit different.

As you can see … they were!

Not only did we see some really lovely ‘recognisable’ drawings …

we noticed that the children loved to cover the entire page with colour …

something we don’t often see when using felt pens or coloured pencils!

It’s always lovely to see what they come up with when trying new art techniques …

and exploring new experiences!

Irresistible factor for drawing with chalk on blackboards and black paper? … 10/10!

I love this activity! Have you tried the same thing but dipping the chalk in white tempera paint first??? Great results there too. Hairspray does a fine job of keeping the chalk on the paper. Thanks for sharing, we haven’t done this in awhile, I’ll have to set some of the chalk out towards the front of the art station and see if it inspires our little friends to use it!
::: Amy we’ve not tried the white paint thing before … sounds strangely interesting! Forgot all about the hairspray idea … thanks for the reminder!

Some vibrant colors on that black paper. It’s so fun to see kids explore with materials. And I notice that each one is completely different – just like your kids!
::: You’re so right on all counts there Scott.

The children at my Kinder have been enjoying this activity this term too. We have been using soft pastels which I bought at the art shop and have also added oil pastels to the table. The combination of the two mediums has created some spectacular art work which has been laminated and displayed in the room
::: Kate we agree it’s really is lovely to experience mediums other than textas and pencils!

Children really do love to explore with chalk!
::: They really did love it Deborah!

I love this, but I want to suggest something that will make it even MORE irresistible . . . Have the chalk soaking in water. Oh man, wet chalk on dark paper is spectacular . . . I mean irresistible! =)
::: We’ll give it a go Tom. Amy suggested we dip the chalk in white tempera paint first … We have no idea what will happen but we’ll give that a try as well!

*mutters to self “Must add black paper to ever growing list of play supplies*
::: Ooohhhh yeah … we all have one of those amandab.

Neevah loves drawing on black paper with white chalk I will have to give her more colours to explore with. I also love teacher Tom’s idea of wet chalk that sounds like lots and lots of fun!
::: It does sound like fun Philippa. We’ll give it a go this week!

Adding chalk and black paper to the supply list. I hear ya Amandab that list is getting loooong. I will also try the wet chalk method.
::: Oh we do love good supply list Jennifer! Have fun!
