::: a salty, sensory experience
We always have a healthy supply of salt on hand at kinder as we use it for our playdough and salt ceramic recipes.

This week we raided our salt bucket and popped it into our large sensory tub for the children to have a play. (Later we will recycle it back into the bucket for other uses)

We offered the children a selection of items …

for them to scoop …

and measure.

Pour …

funnel …

and investigate with.

Then again you need no tools at all to write and draw in the salt.

They really enjoyed the sensory experience of sifting the salt through their fingers … and pouring it up their sleeves!

It was interesting to listen to the children discussing in great depth whether or not it was in fact salt … OR was it sugar?!

It was our delightful friend Hannah, as she drew pictures in the tub, who used her senses to conclude it was indeed salt but she did not taste it …

“Listen” she said, “Feel this … I can smell it … it sounds like salt!”
Hee hee hee … Good on you Hannah!

Did children taste it?
I had a boy one year who LOOOVED salt. He would sneak balls of playdough under the loft where we couldn’t see him and devour it! This would have been his culinary heaven. =)
::: Tom nobody (to our knowledge) feasted on the salt but we too have a child who sneaks the playdough to eat … actually he doesn’t even sneak it … he just eats it!

This is fun! Just don’t add water yet! Unless outside where the sun can evaporate.
::: The salt tub is now outside so we must try that Juliet … thanks!

HAdn’t thought of using salt – and it’s reusable – and adding water , what a great idea Juliet – and can you explain to me what the sensory tub actually is – it doesn’t look like a water “trough” on a stand, – is it on legs or a big tub on a table? it looks bigger than mine and I am looking for a new one. Thanks! :0
::: Louise it is a water trough which sits in a stand but here we have it sitting on a table.
They’re not cheap but here’s a link. http://www.windmill.net.au/vmchk/Category/Sand-Water-Play/Sand-Water-Trays.html
Man, that is one big load of salt! I love Hannah’s comments – very sensory comments for a very sensory experience
::: Yep … Hannah’s quote is definitely one for the books Jenny … classic!

Thanks for that…:)
::: Our pleasure Louise.

Talk about adding some flavor to your sensory tub! I love the writing and designs they did.
::: We know Scott. Literacy in a tub of salt, how cool is that?

Sounds like fun Sherry and Donna! Have you ever sprinkled salt onto any food dye paintings and let them dry…it’s pretty funky and can be used for further art work (backgrounds, collage etc.)
I am enjoying reading your blogs while I am away!
Ruth
::: Hello Ruth! No we haven’t tried the salt thing … but we will! It’s so nice to hear from you.
