::: balance, in, over, under, across and through

Recently we posted about the ball handling skills we teach the children at kinder when they are coming in from outside play.

But we like to challenge our children in other physical ways too, like balancing bean bags…

or walking in interesting ways such as on our heels …

or heel to toe …

very tricky indeed!

We also use a lot of positional language with the children such as instructing them to stand behind, in front or beside us.

Sometimes we set up small obstacles for them to balance along …

step in …

go over …

travel across …

move under …

and through.

All to help improve their gross motor and numeracy skills!

Using your whole body to learn the meaning of over, under, through, etc. That’s great learning! And fun, too.

  2. I love following your postings and wish every child could have the opportunity to be at a school like yours. As a pediatric occupational therapist, I especially love activities that directly impact fine and gross motor skills (as almost everything does).

The language of position is not only important for literacy but for confidence in developing maths skills. Most children who struggle with maths do so because they do not know or understand these basic terms. It’s good to see it being taught specifically in a fun way.

What a wonderful way to teach concepts that can be pretty abstract for little people! I have enjoyed looking around your website and found many great examples of language activities that are fun and engaging. Thank you!

::: Thank you Emily and welcome on board! :) :)
