marbles & cylinders

As the rain tumbled down outside one day, the children found some cylinders at the invention table to play with, but instead of using cars and trucks to roll down them, which they have enjoyed doing before, they tried marbles and small balls.
The cylinders were varying lengths and circumferences and the children had great fun working out what size balls and marbles went the fastest and which cylinder was the best to use to obtain the required result.

In order to stop the marbles from rolling all around the floor and under chairs and trolleys, a couple of the children grabbed some wooden blocks to create a barrier so the balls and marbles were contained to the mat area. More great thinking by the children!

This kept the children, in particular our energetic boys, entertained for ages.
Naturally races started up…
…and the children cheered each other on as marbles came tumbling down one after another.

Seeing who could collect up the most marbles from the floor, counting them as they went, was as much fun as sending them down the tubes.
Such fun … competition is a great aid to discovery!
