salty dinosaurs

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

We always have plenty of salt at hand as we use it for play dough and salt ceramics. We thought before we did that we could use some of it in our imaginary play area.

Of constant use is our large tray, which we designed ourselves and had made, and fits on top of one of our table. It has an edge which keeps in sand, tanbark, blocks, finger paint etc… It makes a handy imaginary play area too. We put piles of the salt onto it, then added a tree branch, artificial plant, mini logs, rocks and dinosaurs – a simple but irresistible play area.

When the children had had enough, we returned the salt to a large tub to be recycled in future imaginary play spaces,  salt ceramics and playdough.

water shapes

The children enjoy discussing what shape water is and like to see how it takes the shape of whichever container it is in.

We asked the children what shape water would be if we poured into a glove.

Everyone had a feel of how squishy it is. Then we asked how it would feel if we froze it, which created a great chat about change of state, liquid to solid.

The next day when we pulled it out of the freezer we asked them again how it would feel, then everyone handled it …

… which started it melting fairly quickly!

The next step was to think about what shape the ice would be – the unveiling is always so exciting!!! Then they had a play with it and saw how it changes back to a liquid.

This is a great hot day activity.
